A New Season at Owen’s Honey Hive: Loss, Renewal, and What’s Coming Next

Every season in beekeeping teaches you something new—sometimes gently, sometimes all at

once. This winter was one of those harder lessons for us at Owen’s Honey Hive. Despite our best efforts, we lost several of our colonies to wax moths, and our last remaining hive ultimately decided to abscond. It’s never easy to watch your apiary go quiet, especially when you’ve poured so much care into each box, frame, and forager.

But beekeeping is a cycle of resilience, and we’re already moving into the next chapter.

New Bees Have Arrived

We’re excited to share that we just brought in two nucs today from Coy Bee Company to rebuild our apiary and give us a strong foundation going into spring. We’ve prepared the hives with extra attention to ventilation, pest prevention, and space management to keep our girls thriving.

Rebuilding is part of the journey, and we’re grateful to have a community that supports us through every season.

Our Website Just Got a Refresh

We’ve also taken this downtime to give our website a much‑needed update. It’s now cleaner, easier to navigate, and better reflects who we are as a small family apiary. We're still tweaking it here and there, but if you haven’t visited in a while, now’s a great time to take a look.

Honey Will Be Back Soon

Even with the setbacks, we’re on track to have fresh, local honey available again soon. As the new colonies establish themselves and the nectar flow picks up along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we’ll keep you updated on harvest timing. If you’ve been waiting for your favorite wildflower honey, it’s coming back.

New Product: Beeswax Lip Balm in Three Flavors

We’re also expanding our handmade product line. This season, we’re introducing beeswax lip balm, crafted with pure beeswax from our hives and simple, nourishing ingredients. It will be available in three flavors:

  • Original

  • Peppermint

  • Vanilla

These balms are smooth, long‑lasting, and made with the same care we put into every jar of honey. We'll let you know as soon as we have the ready for sale.

Thank You for Supporting Local Beekeeping

Running a small, family apiary means celebrating the wins and weathering the losses, and we’re grateful to have you with us through it all. Your support helps us keep bees on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, nurture pollinators, and continue producing the honey and handmade goods you love.

Here’s to a new season, new bees, and sweet things ahead.
